The Universal Bag

Launched in 2021 after two years of research and exploration, the Universal Bag is Anya Hindmarch’s most ambitious sustainability project to date. The next generation of reusable bag, the Universal Bag builds on I Am Not A Plastic Bag and I Am A Plastic Bag, tackling single-use plastic, rescuing post-consumer waste from landfill and inspiring a reuse mindset. The spacious shopping bag is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable, guaranteed for 10 years and offered at an accessible price point.

The Universal Bag at Whole Foods Market

Our latest Universal Bag launches with Whole Foods Market in early August 2024. Arriving in brown with green and white accents, the new edition – the 15th Universal Bag – will be available in selected Whole Foods Market stores across the UK.

As a preview for our community a limited number of the bags will be available at our Sloane Street flagship store on Saturday 27th July 2024. As usual, this will be first come first served, and will be limited to one bag per customer.

A Global Initiative

It is the scale of the project which sets the Universal Bag apart. Designed by Anya Hindmarch and made by Solent Group, it includes multiple collaborations across supermarkets, each working with us on their own unique design and colour which are sold exclusively in their stores. The ongoing global initiative sees new editions introduced regularly across the world – to date 15 retailers across 3 countries, with dynamic future plans.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

In the years since I Am Not A Plastic Bag and I Am A Plastic Bag, use of single-use plastic bags has reduced dramatically. But it’s not enough. Often, reusable bags are forgotten, only used a few times, or even thrown away, as it’s tricky or impossible to recycle them.

As a more thoughtful purchase, The Universal Bag is intended to inspire a reuse mindset. Its recycling mechanism – an innovative built-in returns pouch – prevents contamination and ensures 100% recyclability. Where can I buy The Universal Bag in the UK?

Putting eco before ego, UK supermarkets Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Selfridges Foodhall, Asda, Co-op, Tesco and Morrisons have collaborated with Anya Hindmarch to launch the project with the bag only available to buy in selected stores (and not at Anya Hindmarch). The Sainsbury’s edition was available in stores nationwide and Selfridges at their foodhalls. The Waitrose edition was available in stores across the UK. Where can I recycle my bag?

The Universal Bag is 100% recyclable with the innovative returns pouch that is part of the bag. Simply fold your bag into its pouch and post through the nearest postbox using the printed Freepost address. The pouch avoids contamination and ensures that when it reaches the recycling centre it will be 100% recycled locally.
What happens if I need a replacement bag?

The Universal Bag is a reinvention of the traditional shopping bag and has been tested and designed to last. With appropriate treatment, it is guaranteed to last 10 years. If for any reason the bag is faulty, please return your bag to the store where you bought it for a replacement or full refund, or following the guidance on the bag, return it using the FREEPOST envelope, enclosing your name and return address. Only faulty bags will be replaced.
